Mayors and Schools

ISBN: 1592134696
Release Date: 2006
Number of pages: 229
Author: Stefanie Chambers
Publisher: Temple University Press

Download and read online Mayors and Schools in PDF and EPUB This book examines the national trend toward mayoral control of big-city school districts through comparative case studies of Chicago and Cleveland - two school districts that adopted mayoral control during the 1990s. Chambers takes up the question of whether granting control to mayors in major cities will indeed fix public school systems. She finds that although both cities have experienced noteworthy improvements in student performance since mayoral control, the increased centralization of decision-making has reduced minority participation in democratic politics. Chambers argues that this conundrum of improved performance at the cost of decreased minority participation could undermine the very democratic and civic values that schools try to teach. In a concluding chapter, she offers several suggestions for better incorporating minority participation educational decisions, even while centralizing more power in mayors' offices.

Download and read online Education Policy for the 21st Century in PDF and EPUB "Amid widespread concern that schools are failing to prepare students for workforce participation, higher education, and the economic and technological challenges of the twenty-first century, public school reform efforts across the nation have focused increasingly on standards, performance, and accountability. A particularly critical question involves improving educational opportunities for children in poverty and for other ""at-risk"" students who represent an increasing proportion of public school enrollment.Education Policy for the 21st Century examines a range of key issues in standards-based education reform. Contributors focus on educational trends and issues in metropolitan Chicago, state education policy in Illinois, lessons of Chicago school reform, and standards-based, systemic reform in other states. The volume also includes chapters on standards and assessment in school accountability systems, effects of school spending on student achievement, and ""building-level"" obstacles to urban school reform.Presenting valuable data and a variety of perspectives, this book illuminates both the challenges and opportunities presented by standards-based education reform."

So macht Mathe Spaß!

Download and read online Culture literacy learning in PDF and EPUB How can educators improve the literacy skills of students in a historically underachieving urban high school? In this timely book, the author draws on her experience as a participant observer to provide a unique, insider's view to both designing and implementing a culturally responsive approach to improve learning and teaching in a specific subject area. The Cultural Modeling Project, which she presents here, drew on competencies students already had in African American Vernacular English (AAVE) discourse and hip hop culture to tackle complex problems in the study of literature. Using vivid descriptions from real classrooms, she describes how AAVE supported student learning and reasoning; how students in turn responded to the reform initiative, and how teachers adapted the cultural framework to the English/language arts curriculum. While the focus is on literacy and African American students, the book examines the functions of culture in facilitating learning and offers principles for leveraging cultural knowledge in support of subject matter specific to academic learning. This much awaited book offers important lessons for researchers, school district leaders, and local practitioners regarding the complex ways that cultural knowledge is constructed and plays out in classroom life, in the life of a school, and in the life of a whole-school reform initiative.
